List of Companies That Can Sponsor a Visa in the UK: How to Actually Use It
Everyone links to 'the list'. Almost nobody explains how to use it: what an A-rating means, why being listed doesn't mean hiring, how to cut 127,000 rows down to employers worth your time, and how to verify an offer is real.
1. Where the real list lives
The authoritative source is the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors (Workers) — a CSV the government re-publishes roughly every fortnight. Our UK visa sponsor list mirrors it daily, adds search and city/industry filters, and offers the full register as a free CSV download. Every addition and removal is logged on the Sponsor Register Watch.
2. What a licence does — and doesn't — mean
A sponsor licence means the Home Office has approved the company to issue Certificates of Sponsorship. It does not mean the company is hiring, will consider visa candidates, or has ever sponsored anyone. Roughly 98% of licences are A-rated (fully compliant); a B-rating means the company is under a compliance action plan and cannot sponsor new hires until it returns to A.
3. Cutting 127,000 rows down to a shortlist
- Filter by your target city — sponsor density varies enormously (London has tens of thousands; most towns a few hundred).
- Filter by industry so you're looking at employers who hire your occupation.
- Check who is actually hiring: our sponsor pages show live sponsored vacancies, and the Top-50 hiring ranking lists the companies with the most open roles today.
- Confirm your occupation clears the salary rules for that employer's typical pay — check your SOC code's going rate against the £41,700 threshold.
- Verify the company on the official gov.uk register the day before you share documents.
4. Red flags: when a 'sponsor' isn't
- Anyone charging you for a Certificate of Sponsorship — CoS-selling is illegal, full stop.
- A company name that almost-but-not-quite matches a register entry (scammers impersonate real sponsors).
- Recruiters promising 'guaranteed sponsorship' before any interview.
- Offers far below the going rate for the role — a licensed sponsor knows the salary rules.

Frequently asked questions
- Is there an official list of UK companies that can sponsor visas?
- Yes — the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors (Workers), published on gov.uk and updated roughly fortnightly. Our directory mirrors it daily with search, filters, live hiring data and a free CSV download.
- Does being on the sponsor list mean a company will sponsor me?
- No. A licence means the company can legally sponsor. Whether it will depends on its hiring needs and budget — sponsorship costs an employer £1,320/year in Immigration Skills Charge plus fees. Target companies with live sponsored vacancies.
- How often does the UK sponsor list change?
- The Home Office publishes updates roughly every two weeks; a typical release adds tens of companies and removes a similar number. Our Sponsor Register Watch logs every change per release.
